Quayside Ukes has now been going for over eight years. It all started in response to a request to run an evening ukulele jam at the Duke of Wellington pub in Shoreham. The ‘Uke at the Duke’ jam was born in January 2011, led by the great and inspirational Lawrie Stevens. It started off with a good attendance and quickly became a vibrant monthly event. Over the next six years this very popular jam just got bigger and bigger. It had outgrown the pub and a larger venue was needed. In November 2017 ‘Uke at the Duke’ moved across the road to the Sussex Yacht Club and became ‘Quayside Ukes’.

These jams are now led by Derek and Pete. ‘Rock Steady Pete’ has been around from the early ‘Uke at the Duke’ days being Lawrie’s right hand man. Derek, who has run Ukulele Jams during various Steyning Festivals, took over from Lawrie in November 2018 when Lawrie and his wife Sally decided to move to Wales. The jam is as busy as ever having over 90 ukulele players strumming and singing away to songs from the different decades and genres. They’ve even got a Bass Ukulele and Cahon player backing them up. Players are encouraged to help lead songs during the evening making it more inclusive. The main aim is to have fun and hopefully improve playing the instrument!

A ‘Mini Quayside Ukes’ session started a couple of years ago where players can work on music for the main jam. This has proven to be popular and is hosted by Jo every fourth Tuesday evening at 7.30pm also at the Sussex Yacht Club.

Quayside Ukes produces its own songbooks, always introducing new ones with Volume 17 being launched in May 2019. Derek and Pete have recently introduced the use of Powerpoint to project the songs onto a screen, although some players prefer using their own printed song sheets or computer tablets. Members are invited to submit their favourite songs for inclusion into forthcoming books. We even have a few original compositions!

Quayside Ukes meet at “The Sussex Yacht Club”, 85/89 Brighton Road, Shoreham-by-Sea, BN43 6RF on the second Tuesday of each month from 7.30pm till 9.30pm.

The Mini Quayside Ukes meet every fourth Tuesday of each month from 7.30pm till 9.30pm at the same venue.

All abilities are welcome. Just come along! Membership is free, although we do ask for a voluntary £2 contribution to go towards funding of the Sussex Ukulele Festival and other Ukulele events. If you would like any further information please email quaysideukes@outlook.com

We are currently (April 2019) busy organising the 7th Sussex Ukulele Festival at the Ropetackle Arts Centre in Shoreham, Sunday 15th September 2019. The festival will have Workshops, Ukulele Jams and Special Guests performing. The theme this year is ‘The Summer of 1969’ so cast your minds back to Woodstock, the moon landing, flower power and ‘love and peace’. Get up into the loft or the charity shops and dress to impress in your best 1960s gear. Have a look at our festival website

Christmas Party Bash at Quayside Ukes

Tuesday 11th December 2018 at 7.30pm

It's that time of year again. We're going to have a bigger Christmas Jam than ever. We'll be using books 4, 13 and of course the Christmas Songs book. You can download all these books from this website. We will be also projecting the songs again this time but on the ceiling!! There will be crackers, party poppers, mince pies and plenty more for an evening of festive fun. Do come along and help make it a real hum dinga of a party. If you belong to another jam, why not come as a group. We've got plenty of room and who knows you could come and do a turn if you like? Starts at 7.30pm at the Sussex Yacht Club but arrive early to get a good seat and don't forget to wear that festive jumper and hat.

Quayside Ukes Volume 2 update
If you download Volume 2 now you will get the updated version. None of the songs have changed, so if you already have a printed copy that you're happy with you don't need to print it again. In the old file the pages were not all set to A4 and this has apparently caused some problems when printing. In the new file all the pages are A4. If you keep a copy of this file on your computer or tablet etc it is recommended that you replace this with the new version.

How do you know if you have the new version? Open the file using Adobe Reader. From the File menu select 'Properties...' A new box will open, make sure the 'Description' tab at the top is selected. Look further down on the left and you should see 'Modified: 27/11/18 16:55:49'.

Our August 2018 Jam

Tuesday 14th August 2018 in The Sussex Yacht Club, Brighton Road, Shoreham-by-Sea.

We will be using books 2, 8 and 11.

This is our last meeting before our Festival so a chance to oil our voices and stretch our strings ahead of what is going to be a great weekend.

Opening night on Saturday 8th September will be aboard Houseboat Verda, where we will jam using Book 7 then sing and dance to the mighty "Pukes" before being entertained by the "Bowie Tribute Band" which features players from our own jam. We will then end up with a bit of a party Jam.
You need a £1.00 ticket for this event which is only available from me at the August meeting or by emailing me at quaysideukes@outlook.com

Beer and Wine will be available on the Boat but soft drinks have to be brought with you. The line up is here.

Festival tickets for Sunday 9th are available from the Ropetackle box office priced at just £2.00 each, click here to book. Over half have gone already so book soon.

Once you have your admission tickets you can again email me to book any workshops you would like to try, they are as follows:

11.45 – 12.15 Improvers with Lawrie £3.00
Tips and hints for getting the best from your uke.

12.30 – 13.15 Uke Can Sing In Harmony! £3.00
A unique vocal and ukulele workshop led by members of Qukulele!
Our mission – to encourage uke jammers to bust out of the shackles of singing in unison! We'll be tackling one of our infamous mash-ups (or is that a pile-up?!) – Lady Gaga vs. Madonna!
This workshop is for:
Singers – from those who can confidently carry a tune, to those who can’t carry one in a bucket!
Players – from beginner to intermediate.
Workshoppers will also get a chance to perform the song in the auditorium later in the afternoon, if they want to.

13.20 – 14.05 Strumming Patterns with Pete £3.00
Get those strumming hands going to different rhythms.

14.15 – 14.55 Playing the blues with Paul Fallows £3.00
The Blues simple and straight forward

15.00 – 15.45 Charlie Dore's workshop £3.00
The Unexpected Ukulele – a workshop for the curious.
Multi-award winning songwriter Charlie Dore shares her experience of using the ukulele as a fundamental tool in writing, arrangement and accompaniment and how, after an accidental encounter with her first ukulele she has grown to love and respect its hidden powers.
Charlie has included the ukulele as part of her instrumental palette for many years, not only on her own albums but also on songs written for others, occasionally ending up on records one wouldn’t normally expect to feature a ukulele…
This will be a highly inclusive session during which Charlie hopes you will enjoy experimenting with the ukulele’s ability to shape-shift, sometimes within the space of a couple of bars. Bring a ukulele and an open mind.

The workshops are likely to be busy so please book soon.

Lastly we are grateful to Noah Ukuleles for donating a hand built instrument for the raffle. Please buy lots of tickets as running an event like this does take a lot of resources.

See you at the August Jam

Our February 2018 Jam

Tuesday 13th February 2018 at 7.30pm in The Sussex Yacht Club, Brighton Road, Shoreham-by-Sea

We will be using books 5, 8 and 11. As it is the day before Valentines I will try and pick out the romantic songs, but as usual please feel free to shout out your requests. Book 11 makes another appearance which makes it the most used book this year!!!!

Our new name will be Quayside Ukes. This should be available on all media platforms and is generic enough to be moved whilst still identifying with the local area. Thanks for all your suggestions, it was great fun looking through them and I hope you like this one, or can at least put up with it. It will lend itself well to logos and I hope we will be able to move the email address and other stuff over as soon as possible.

Uke Camp will be on 15th to 17th June
Last year we had a jam on Friday night and Saturday night and an open mic on Saturday afternoon. Jo Hockley is organising, so see her to book your place and let's hope we have a repeat of last year's weather.

Finally book 15 is just a meeting away, it has been a year since we had a new book and this one has a great mix of challenging and easy songs, more later.

See you next Tuesday

Lawrie

Thursday, 4 January 2018

Our January 2018 Jam

Tuesday 9th January 2018 at 7.30pm in our new venue: The Sussex Yacht Club, Brighton Road, Shoreham-by-Sea.

Happy New Year to all Ukers
I hope you enjoy your music in 2018

We will be kicking off 2018 using books 2, 11 and 12.

Book 15 is on its way, but if you have any last-minute requests please send them to Pete or me very quickly - you won't have to lead them when they're performed, but if you want to then that is great as well.

Planning for the festival is under way and I hope to have some more news for that soon. As usual we're looking for sponsors first, so if you are working with anyone who may like to help please let me know.

Looking forward to seeing you on the 9th.

Lawrie

NB We have a new index to all our current songs, the download link is below the songbook links.
