Mini Jam on the fourth Tuesday of each month 7.30pm till 9.30pm.
Beginners welcome at both jams.
Quayside Ukes has now been going for over eight years. It all started in response to a request to run an evening ukulele jam at the Duke of Wellington pub in Shoreham. The ‘Uke at the Duke’ jam was born in January 2011, led by the great and inspirational Lawrie Stevens. It started off with a good attendance and quickly became a vibrant monthly event. Over the next six years this very popular jam just got bigger and bigger. It had outgrown the pub and a larger venue was needed. In November 2017 ‘Uke at the Duke’ moved across the road to the Sussex Yacht Club and became ‘Quayside Ukes’.
These jams are now led by Derek and Pete. ‘Rock Steady Pete’ has been around from the early ‘Uke at the Duke’ days being Lawrie’s right hand man. Derek, who has run Ukulele Jams during various Steyning Festivals, took over from Lawrie in November 2018 when Lawrie and his wife Sally decided to move to Wales. The jam is as busy as ever having over 90 ukulele players strumming and singing away to songs from the different decades and genres. They’ve even got a Bass Ukulele and Cahon player backing them up. Players are encouraged to help lead songs during the evening making it more inclusive. The main aim is to have fun and hopefully improve playing the instrument!
A ‘Mini Quayside Ukes’ session started a couple of years ago where players can work on music for the main jam. This has proven to be popular and is hosted by Jo every fourth Tuesday evening at 7.30pm also at the Sussex Yacht Club.
Quayside Ukes produces its own songbooks, always introducing new ones with Volume 17 being launched in May 2019. Derek and Pete have recently introduced the use of Powerpoint to project the songs onto a screen, although some players prefer using their own printed song sheets or computer tablets. Members are invited to submit their favourite songs for inclusion into forthcoming books. We even have a few original compositions!
Quayside Ukes meet at “The Sussex Yacht Club”, 85/89 Brighton Road, Shoreham-by-Sea, BN43 6RF on the second Tuesday of each month from 7.30pm till 9.30pm.
The Mini Quayside Ukes meet every fourth Tuesday of each month from 7.30pm till 9.30pm at the same venue.
All abilities are welcome. Just come along! Membership is free, although we do ask for a voluntary £2 contribution to go towards funding of the Sussex Ukulele Festival and other Ukulele events. If you would like any further information please email firstname.lastname@example.org
We are currently (April 2019) busy organising the 7th Sussex Ukulele Festival at the Ropetackle Arts Centre in Shoreham, Sunday 15th September 2019. The festival will have Workshops, Ukulele Jams and Special Guests performing. The theme this year is ‘The Summer of 1969’ so cast your minds back to Woodstock, the moon landing, flower power and ‘love and peace’. Get up into the loft or the charity shops and dress to impress in your best 1960s gear. Have a look at our festival website

Saturday 5th November will see us playing in the foyer at Ropetackle ahead of the "Hope and Social" performance in the Auditorium. We will be using book 11 for this one. All welcome to jam and if you stay for the concert you can get a cheap ticket at just £8.00.

Hi Uke at the Duke Members
Our next meeting is on 11th October when we will be finishing off our book 13 with support from books 2 and 11. I think book 13 has gone down really well so far with only a few blips, so I am sure we will finish it with style.
Last month you remember we played Rolling Sideways for Rich Huxley of Hope and Social fame. Well they are playing at the Ropetackle on Saturday 5th November and would like us to play in the foyer before the performance. We can play a few favorites and as a reward you can buy a reduced ticket for the show for just £8.00.
If you just want to come along and play at the beginning that will be fine, please come along to the Ropetackle at 7pm. Be good if you could let me know if you are interested.
If you haven't seen the video it's a bit dark, but you can see it below:
Thinking ahead to next spring it would appear that many of us have tents, caravans, motorhomes and such like so we are thinking of arranging a weekend away with uke playing and general merriment, if this appeals please let Jo or me know.
See you at the jam

Lots of playing and excitement in the week ahead.
The next full meeting of Uke at The Duke is on Tuesday 13th September when we will be using books 13, 9 and 7.
We will be recording our version of Rolling Sideways from book 13, I hope you can remember it from our last meeting. The plan is to record it then send it up to our good friend Rich Huxley of the Hope and Social band who set us the challenge in the first place.
Before then of course we have our festival weekend with the warm up at the Railway Inn, Portslade on Saturday followed by the main event on Sunday 11th at "The Ropetackle", High Street, Shoreham. As well as the jams and workshops I would really appreciate it if you stayed to watch the two main acts of "The Corner Laughers" and Sara Spade.
There are a few places available on the workshops so do email email@example.com if you would like to reserve a place.
Full details of the the festival can be found at http://www.ukulelefestivalsussex.co.uk/
Please bring all your family and friends on what promises to be a great day of celebration and appreciation of our lovely instrument.
I look forward to seeing you at both events.

We will also be trying out the songs we will be playing at the Littlehampton Ukulele Jam of Jams on the 17th July. We are to play eight songs, four as a performance to everybody then another four with everyone joining in. Jams from all over the county will also be doing this, so there will be lots of participation.
The event runs from 1.00pm till about 7.00pm on the stage by the sea which is at the end of Banjo Road and we will be playing at 3.00pm. We have been asked to make ourselves known 30 minutes before that. Be sure to allow time for parking because although there are two large car parks nearby, they tend to fill up quickly on a sunny Sunday!
We will need to take chairs (or a blanket), music stand, uke and music. Jamming books will be available on the day. You could make a day of it and bring the whole family!
Here are the songs to download:
Budapest (Book 11 page 12)
Run For Home (Book 11 page 17)
The Passenger (Book 11 page 27)
Uncle Cyril (Book 12 page 30)
Wukulele Jam Songs
Wukulele Performance Songs
Zip file containing all the above
Tuesday, 31 May 2016
Next meeting we will be using books 11, 6 and 8.
Book 11 is what we will use at the Southwick Green Adur Festival get together. If you can get along to Southwick Green on Saturday 18th June at 12.45pm then that would be great. I will do a short workshop then we can jam out a few songs. Will then repeat the process at 2.30pm.
On Sunday 17th July we will be teaming up with Wukulele and playing in Littlehampton at the Jam of Jams. We get to play four songs and then share another four with the other jams who will do the same with us. It promises to be a great day out and we will practise the songs at our July meeting. Times and venue to follow.
Finally I have flyers for our festival which I shall have on the 14th and would be grateful if you could distribute among friends and family.
See you then
Monday, 2 May 2016
At our next meeting we will be using books 1, 3, and 10
Please help me out on June 18th on Southwick Green at 13.00hrs. Uke at the Duke is to play some songs and also give a bit of guidance for budding ukulele starters. I will have a few ukes for people to try out.
I have sent out an email to all the people who expressed an interest in Sargent Pepper so this is your last chance to be part of that project.
Looking forward to seeing you on the 10th.

We have played all the way through book 12 so it will be nice to visit the songs we liked and the ones which were perhaps not quite so polished the first time through. Requests are of course always welcome.
We are booked in to play at the Littlehampton Jam of Jams on Sunday 17th July so keep that day free. We will be teaming up with Wukulele for our spot, more details later as they become available. Also check out our Facebook page. We are Uke @ the Duke on Facebook, there are always lots of gigs and chat.

This next meeting will mark the start of our 6th year, it seems like only yesterday we met for the first one.
This meeting we will use books 6, 11 and 12. We have not yet played all the songs in book 12, so let's see what delights are still waiting to be found within.
